Brazil’s president, Dilma Rousseff, jointly with Corporación América’s directors, headed the opening ceremony of the new Juscelino Kubitschek airport south terminal.

Today, Corporación América, a company that runs 53 airports worldwide, officially inaugurated the new south terminal of Brasilia airport.

Built up by Inframerica (consortium made up of Corporación América and the Brazilian company Engevix), in a record time of 15 months, the new south terminal was extended by 40,000 sqm while the number of air bridges was brought from 13 to 29 in Brazil’s capital airport.

The works, carried out with the airport operating normally, will expand the air terminal’s traffic capacity from 16 to 21 million passengers.

Likewise, by taking the total surface of the aircraft maneuvering area to 300,000 sqm, Brasilia will be ready to receive up to three 747-400 planes at the same time. With these modifications, the airport will qualify as category E, enabling it to start operating aircrafts of the 777-200 type.

Besides the restructuring and expansion activities completed in this first stage (delivered one month ahead of the deadline in the contract), there is the construction of a 1500 sqm VIP room (Latin America’s largest), a 3100-vehicle capacity parking lot and a new access connector.

In May, Corporación América will build the northern terminal of Brasilia airport -today in its final stage. This terminal, with a surface area of 15,000 sqm, will have 8 air bridges added to the existing ones.

A total of 82,000 cubic meters of concrete, 3000 tons of steel and 320 km of electrical wiring were used in this work that took 15 months and demanded an investment of USD 600 million.

The opening ceremony was attended by the president of Brazil, the governor of the Federal District and minister of Civil Aviation, Wellington Moreira Franco, the directors of Corporación América, Martín and Hugo Eurnekian, jointly with Matías Gainza Eurnekian.

Martín Eurnekian, Corporación América’s director, stated in this respect that: “It is one of the most important airports we have built and restructured in the last years, both in terms of passenger numbers and of the Brazilian capital’s strategic location, main hub of the continent’s southern cone”.

In her speech, Brazil’s president, Dilma Rousseff, emphasized “the speed and quality” in which this new terminal was built, and added that the transformation and improvement of the airport honored the name of Kubitschek, the former president that 54 years ago started the foundation of Brasilia.

The Brazilian head of State also highlighted the participation of Corporación América, “a company from Argentina, from our dear Mercosur”. “Please feel welcome”, she concluded, referring to Brazil’s need to build partnerships with companies of the like of Eurnekian’s holding company, which has proven experience and know-how in the service industry.
