Corporación América officially opened the new Natal Airport

Nuevo Aeropuerto de Natal

With an investment of R$500 million the new International Airport Governador Aluízio Alves was officially opened. The airport is located in Natal, the capital city of the northeast state of Rio Grande do Norte, in Brazil.

The new air terminal, built by the Inframerica consortium (comprised of Corporación América, headed by Mr. Eduardo Eurnekian, and Brazilian company Engevix) is delivered seven months ahead of schedule as stated in the bid specifications.

The international airport started operations on 31 May and in the setting up process, all operations and services previously rendered in the old airport Augusto Severo -now turned into a military air base- were relocated to this new terminal.

Currently, the airport Governador Aluízio Alves has a capacity for up to 6.2 million passengers; with the number predicted to double over the next decade.

“We are delivering a terminal with capacity for more than twice the current passenger movement: Natal airport is an airport of the future”, pointed out Martín Eurnekian, Corporación América director, in charge of the airport business unit.

It is a 28-year concession agreement with an estimated total investment of R$650 million, of which R$500 million have already been invested. The construction works created 4000 direct jobs and nearly 3000 indirect jobs.

The opening ceremony was headed by Civil Aviation ministry, Wellington Moreira Franco; Rio Grande do Norte state governor, Rosalba Ciarlini; Chamber of Deputies president, Henrique Alves, and São Gonçalo do Amarante prefect, Jaime Calado.

The authorities of Corporación América also present at the inauguration event were Martín Eurnekian, director in charge of the airport business; Matías Gainza Eurnekian, president of Unitec Blue and Unitec do Brasil; Hugo Eurnekian, president of the oil company CGC and director of energy investment; Jorge del Águila Eurnekian, CEO of Armavir, Fin del Mundo and NQN wineries and person in charge of the agro-industrial undertakings of the group, and Matías Patanian, CEO of Aeropuertos Argentina 2000.

The passenger terminal has an area of 42,000 m2, with parking space for 860 vehicles, 42 check-in desks and 6 air bridges with capacity to operate 8 airplanes at the same time. In turn, the operations yard has an area of over 210,000 m2. The runway is 3300m x 60m, and is prepared to receive the colossal Airbus A380.

Building the new Natal airport demanded the use of 25,000 m2 of granite, 37,000 m3 of concrete, 2000 km of wire-cable and 3,700,000 kg of steel. The terminal design includes the installation of 55 retail stores and the provision of free wifi service, as in the terminals of Brasilia, Ezeiza y Aeroparque.

Based on its geographical location, Natal airport is not only a strategically located terminal in the tourist route of the Brazilian northeast beaches (Pipa beach, among others), but it is also the airport of South America with the best connectivity with and shortest distance from the south of Europe. Indeed, a flight between Natal and Lisboa will only take 6.5 hours.

Corporación América, member of the Inframerica consortium, which besides having the concession of Natal airport has the concession of Brasilia airport, is the world’s largest private airport operator in terms of number of terminals it operates, which currently amount to 53, distributed in Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Italy and Armenia. The holding company has also diversified its activities into other business units, such as construction, services, agro-industry, energy (gas and oil, biofuels, wind energy), semiconductors and nanotechnology (with Unitec Blue in Argentina and Six-Unitec do Brasil in Minas Gerais)
